Position Summary: This position is responsible for managing all of our dry dock assets located within our 63 acre facility to include: 2 floating dry docks, 40 x220 graving dock and a 140 x 1154 graving dock. The primary duties of this position include maintenance, operation, scheduling and coordination of our docks. This position is also responsible for the oversight of our internal carpentry and sheet metal departments in both the repair and new construction divisions of our business.

Detailed Description:
  • Manages the operation and maintenance of the 7000 LT Floating Dry Dock, 220 Graving Dock and 1154 Graving Dock. Directs maintenance crews in regard to machinery and equipment repair, operates the dry dock by flooding and pumping, vessel positioning and scheduling docking crews, tugs and services.
  • Manage and document Facility Preventative Maintenance Program to maintain NAVSEA Dry Dock Certification.
  • Participate in docking and undocking conferences for military and commercial vessels.
  • Calculate vessel displacement to determine if vessel size and weight are within the parameters for the dry dock and work with the Engineering Department to develop blocking and pumping plans.
  • Read prints in order to design layouts for block setting and vessel repair.
  • Oversee block construction and setting utilizing the docking plan or lines plan.
  • Record and log all docking and undocking events; drafts, times, pumping sequences, etc.
  • Communicate call orders when using floating dry dock .
  • Sound tanks for proper water level.
  • Inspect and maintain tanks, valves and pumps on the floating dry docks and graving docks.
  • Effectively communicate technical information with co-workers, customers and tugs for towing and positioning of vessels.
  • Apply customer service skills.
  • Direct Carpenter and Sheet Metal departments for both repair and new construction activities:
    • Joiner, windows, doors and flooring
    • Asbestos abatement
    • Yard/building maintenance
    • Hull insulation
    • Thermal pipe and exhaust insulation
    • Duct work and spool fab/install
  • Ability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on the waterfront.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises 10 to 20 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Formal certificate from a recognized Dock Master s course
  • 5-10 years experience in shipbuilding or ship repair with a minimum of 5 years working with a docking crew
  • Read and understand blueprints

Desired Qualifications:
  • 3+ years management experience or commensurate education
  • Prior carpenter apprentice/training is desired
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience using Time and Attendance tracking software
  • Journeyman or equivalent certification
  • Strong math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Experience with ABS, USCG, NEC, IEEE 45 standards
  • Ability to work as a team and individually with a positive and professional attitude
